What is Laparoscopic Surgery?

“Open” surgery typically involves one larger incision.  In  laparoscopic or “minimally invasive” surgery, the surgeon makes several small incisions.  A tiny camera is inserted into one incision.  At the end of the camera is a small, lighted telescope which is connected to a video monitor.  Surgical instruments are inserted through the other incisions.  While watching the monitor, the surgeon is able to use the surgical instruments to perform the procedure.  Because incisions are very small, laparoscopic surgery usually means the surgery can be done on an outpatient basis and the patient typically experiences a quicker recovery, less pain and minimal scarring.

If you are in need of laparoscopic surgery, our team of experienced and skilled surgeons are the preferred choice.

Laparoscopic Surgeries:

Many different surgical procedures can be performed using the laparoscope.  These include:

  • Cholecystectomy
  • Nissen Fundoplication
  • Splenectomy
  • Hernia Surgery
  • Inguinal Hernia
  • Incisional Hernia
  • Umbilical Hernia

Cholecystectomy: Removal of the gallbladder is one of the most common procedures performed by our surgeons. Many people have gallstones and may  suffer symptoms as a result of these gallstones. The gallbladder can be successfully removed with a laparoscope in the majority of cases. This can be accomplished in the outpatient or day surgery setting, with rapid return to normal activities.

Nissen Fundoplication: This laparoscopic procedure is performed for people with intractable gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD). Patients are often referred by their gastroenterologist for this operation.

Splenectomy: Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purura is the most common indication for removal of the spleen laparoscopically. This is achieved in the day surgery setting, with rapid return to normal activities.

Hernia Surgery

Inguinal Hernia: Both men and women can develop inguinal (groin) hernias. These can cause pain and a bulge in the groin. Repair is performed through a small incision. We use a dual-layer mesh system and a pain pump in the majority of our repairs. This allows for rapid recovery and less post-operative pain than in the past.

Incisional Hernia: These hernias develop as a result of previous surgery. Repair usually requires the use of mesh. This can be performed open or in selective cases, with a laparoscope.

Umbilical Hernia: Hernias involving the belly button can cause pain and a bulge in the umbilicus. These can be repaired in the day surgery setting, with or without mesh.
